Is OpenOffice.org Right For You?

I have a confession to make. See, even though I have OpenOffice.org on a computer for my wife to use, my own computer still uses Microsoft Office. My justification there is that I already paid for it, so why not use it? The thing is, I also paid for another program to create PDF files for invoicing, reports and Ebooks. Since I paid for that, I thought it would be good to continue using that too.

It took me a long time to realize that making my job easier was just a matter of installing OpenOffice.org on MY computer and actually using it. When the time comes to renew the other software, I can save money by NOT paying for the renewal. Instead, I can use the fully functional options that are built into OpenOffice.org Office Suite.

Figuring out how much I would save was easy: Microsoft Office upgrade cost $195 at a discount store. The next version will cost even more - up to $400. The PDF creator cost $97 purchased online. Sure that one lets me edit PDF files, but when I have the original documents, that is not necessary; I can edit the original and click a button to create the new PDF file.

Add another $49 to $97 for a program that helps you make an installation CD for OpenOffice.org, so it can be installed on multiple computers. That is great for homes or offices with more than one computer. Why do that when we already have it here for you?

Okay, just looking at the office suite and PDF software, we will save between $292 and $497 by NOT renewing the other packages and using OpenOffice.org Office Suite.

My thinking was off. Yours probably was too, right? Stop thinking that way! It is not always how much you will save now - you already spent that money. Think about how much you will save when the time comes to upgrade or renew the existing software. Think also about the productivity increase when you do not have to learn, or train someone, to use multiple programs.

Sure OpenOffice.org will take a little getting used to if all you ever used was Microsoft Office. That does not take long though and the benefit of increased productivity will pay for itself the first time you use just ONE of the included modules. Oh, you are probably wondering if OpenOffice.org can edit MS Office documents. Yes it does! Not only open, but write to those file formats too, so you can continue sharing them with others.

Thinking about the learning process, every time Microsoft updates their Office programs to another major version, the menu changes too. That means you have to learn it all over again. OpenOffice.org keeps the same menu structure no matter what version you use, making it much easier to upgrade and continue using, year after year.

Concerned about the upcoming open-standard Oasis OpenDocument XML that is being developed for sharing documents between PC, Macintosh and Linux? No worries, OpenOffice.org was built for document sharing. In fact, it is the first office program to fully support OpenDocument XML.

FAQ

For over 15 years a software suite called StarOffice was in development and used by thousands of satisfied users. Now that same software is being improved even more and being offered under the name OpenOffice.org.

WARNING! We have noticed that there are websites charging $47 to download OpenOffice.org. DO NOT pay someone for the privilege to download! Get it on CD instead, with all of the extras listed above.

StarOffice is a commercial product produced by Sun Microsystems using the same underlying software as OpenOffice.org 1.0.

What's so special about open-source software?
Open-source means that the the code behind the computer program is available for all to see. In the words of the Open- Source Initiative: “When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it, people fix bugs. And this can happen at a speed that, if one is used to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems astonishing.”

Is OpenOffice.org 3.x 100% Microsoft Office® file compatible?
As Microsoft rarely publish their file specifications, no-one can answer that question. However, there are plenty of users who regularly edit and exchange documents, spreadsheets, etc. with Microsoft Office® users without any problems. Indeed, some users claim they've seen bigger compatibility problems moving between versions of Microsoft's own products.

NOTE: The only Microsoft file format we have not been able to open so far is Publisher. All the others that we have worked with open properly.

Who We Are

OpenOfficeUSA.com is a subsidiary of Website Managers, LLC, who has been developing and maintaining websites and web servers since 1998. When we learned about OpenOffice.org and started using the software, we knew that more people could use the power and benefits of the package. So we became Community Distributors for OpenOffice.org to help distribute the software suite to those who either do not want to download such large file (130+ Mb), or simply want it on CD-ROM for installation, backup and portability to use on multiple computers.
